avant-garde-arama 08 dressing room shot

so the red terror squad (my little theater family) and i showed a piece we’ve been working on at avant-garde-arama at PS122 on friday. above is a shot from the dressing room, pre-show. it was before i ripped my shirt.

i don’t really know how i ripped my shirt, but somehow i did at some point in the night. that’s another story.

the piece actually went pretty well. we performed last, at around 10:45pm. we were all kind of beat, but it was received warmly. preceding us in the evening were artists like “mr. fashion,” a contemporary of the great ethel eichelberger, and a film by genius artist, ryan trecartin. it was interesting to share a stage with people who’ve been doing this avant-garde shit since the 70s. my parents hated it. (yes they were there). it was hosted by yehuda duenyas and normandy raven sherwood from NTUSA.

after that, laryssa and her girlfriend went to ‘night of a thousand stevies,’ which i intended to go to, but felt too pooped to prance around in a shawl. instead, the remaining girls and i went to paquitos for marg’s and then to some dive bar - where i ran into wade, that hot bartender from metro, showing around his friend from england.

i had my camera (prepped for snapping lots of photos of stevie nicks impersonators) and got drunk so i ended up taking a lot of 8-10 second exposure shots. the bar was really dark, but in these shots it looks like it’s morning. don’t be fooled.

robert moses / sarah jessica parker

as i stood in the mess of times square yesterday, with my mid-morning cigarette, i was confronted with a six-story sarah jessica parker, clad in shimmery snakeskin or sequins or something, selling her new ’sex and the city’ movie. she’s pasted to the side of the marriot marquee and is skewed on a slight diagonal bustling through an ambiguous NYC blur of night and lights (not pictured above, couldn’t find the right pic on the net) like she was captured in the pose by paparazzi as she momentarily glanced up to politely greet an acquaintance while slinking out of a cab. i thought about this woman. about how her sheer presence heralds materialism - the hint of a designer clutch peeking into the frame.

cherry blossom festival - esplinade

today katie and i went to the cherry blossom festival at the brooklyn botanic gardens. it was awesome. our friend kate blum got us in for free and i was able to test out my digicam’s macro lens, with some great results. check out the fot’s :

the peony monument : white peony

white peony at the “peony monument.” katie loved peonies. i had a small conversation with her about how peonies got covered with ants. then i overheard some other woman talking about the same thing. these peonies weren’t covered with ants.

joan armatrading

when it’s been one of those long days - little sleep, too much sugar - and you’ve just come from a gender pac cookoff featuring two top chef celebs that you’ve never heard of before because you don’t own a television.

when your subway ride home brewed thoughts of stagnation - life not moving quite fast enough for you, eh? - thoughts of where you wish you could go other than home. thoughts of what kind of old gay man you will be. whether or not it’s okay to skip dinner.

when any brush with gender theory makes you reevaluate the world - all you see, people around you, things you tolerate, things you stand up for, when it’s right to say something, refuting a discriminatory situation, swallowing your belief in what is right for money or something or sex.

when you’re already feeling hungover, or wait, is that just ’cause you haven’t slept for a few days. maybe. thinking about aspirin. used to go out and party time people. should you get on the l-train and wait for the night to begin?

… when these things occur, a clean (at least superficially) apartment with some stella and a little joan armatrading sounds pretty nice. even though you didn’t get high for free or get that cute intern’s phone number.

pretty nice indeed.

i will live longer than you

ponce\'s face

from goerie.com :

MINNEAPOLIS — Here, kitty kitty….

A new study suggests cat owners are less likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than people who, well, don’t own cats.

And no, dogs don’t do the same trick.

The study, by researchers at the University of Minnesota, found that feline-less people were 30 to 40 percent more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than those with cats.

Yet dog owners had the same rate as nonowners. “No protective effect of dogs as domestic pets was observed,” said the study, which was presented Thursday at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans.

Dr. Adnan Qureshi, a stroke expert at the university, said he decided to raise the question because other studies have suggested pets can help reduce stress.

But the cat-dog differential came as a surprise. “We don’t understand this completely,” he said, but “it’s probably not a coincidence.”

An estimated 90 million cats are owned in the United States, and an estimated 74.8 million dogs, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association.

the above picture is of my cat ponce. i just fed him some new “oceanfish” catfood, played with him for 15 minutes, then pet him while he sat on my lap as i listened to some drum and bass on itunes radio. now he’s sitting on my light blue ikea chair looking semi-enthusiastically toward the window.

thanks, ponce. you will help me not die.

screenshot from crysis

ok. so i just played this new game at my friend michael’s house: ‘crysis.’ above is a screenshot from gamespot.com. below is Jason Ocampo’s review from the site :

It was hard not to be completely impressed when the first images and videos of Crysis appeared about 18 months ago. Scenes of lush jungles and towering alien war machines looked light-years beyond what seemed possible. Of course, the two questions that revolved around Crysis since its announcement were whether it would deliver on those visuals and whether it would deliver a game worthy of those fancy graphics. It turns out that the answer to both those questions is a resounding yes, as Germany’s Crytek has proven that its 2004 hit Far Cry was no fluke. In fact, it was just the beginning from this studio. With its sophomore effort, Crytek has managed to deliver an incredibly advanced and exciting first-person shooter that practically rewrites the rules for the entire genre.

Welcome to the prettiest jungle that you have ever seen in a game. Notice that it’s starting to snow?
