cherry blossom festival - esplinade

today katie and i went to the cherry blossom festival at the brooklyn botanic gardens. it was awesome. our friend kate blum got us in for free and i was able to test out my digicam’s macro lens, with some great results. check out the fot’s :

the peony monument : white peony

white peony at the “peony monument.” katie loved peonies. i had a small conversation with her about how peonies got covered with ants. then i overheard some other woman talking about the same thing. these peonies weren’t covered with ants.

the peony monument : fuscia peony

a beautiful fuscia peony.

the peony monument : purple peony

the peony monument didn’t have a statue or anything. in fact it was just a couple of flower beds showcasing some amazing peonies in bloom. i’m still obsessed with the fact that it was called a “monument.”

lilacs : one

there was this little grove of lilacs past the rose garden, next to the esplanade (where all the cherry trees were) that totally stole the show. they smelled amazing - even from a distance. katie and i were drawn to them. they were an olfactory beacon.

lilacs : two

katie and i smelled these for a while. check out the crazy quadro-leafed buds..

lilacs : three

these white ones smelled amazing. maybe it was because / even though the were browning on the edges. i guess that’s what wabi sabi is all about.

lilacs : four

awesome.

lilacs : five

look at how blue and not blue these guys are. and how awesome and accurate the focus of my built in macro lens is. btw : i used a sony DSC-N1 8.1 megapixel camera.

more cherry blossoms

more cherry blossoms. it was a kind of hazy day, but the light was amazing.

in the japanese garden

these crazy looking flowers were in the japanese garden. this place was packed - but this flowering tree seemed to go unnoticed. people were looking at the koi and the orange shinto gate instead.

japanese maple

a japanese maple with backdrop of false-foreboding grey.

japanese maple

it was an awesome day.

after examining as much flowering trees as we could stomach, we headed into the city to see room for cream, then off to lena’s house for a cinco de mayo party on el tres de mayo. what a delicious end to a perfect day.
