receipt for chapstick way larger than actual chapstick

Friday, September 11th, 2009

i bought this chapstick at a duane reade the other day and nathan noticed that the receipt was unnecessarily larger than the actual chapstick. we started brainstorming about ways receipts could somehow be emailed to you, like they do at the apple store. maybe if you had a microchip in your finger (that you could actually also pay with, maybe) that linked to your email and you would tap it on some keypad and a receipt would be emailed to you. something.

lilac

the other night at around 2:30am while i was furiously working to finish up a powerpoint presentation, i heard a tell-tale “mewing” outside my window. now, as some of you may know, i’ve got a thing for rescuing animals (see here) but the last time i did it, ponce, my giant orange cat, happened to be out of town and therefore couldn’t protest. this time, i had to deal with his nibs.

i went out to see what the fuss was about. i found this little kitty who was really well groomed and had a collar on with a bell but no identification. i figured she escaped from a nearby home and got lost, so i walked up and down the block looking for open windows but couldn’t find any. i finally decided to take her in, with the plan to take her to the animal shelter in the morning to see if she was tagged.

i did a little net research before i did, though. i didn’t want ponce to a.) get any weird diseases or b.) be pissed at me forever. i did what [insert random/creepy cat forum blog site name here] suggested and rushed her inside to the bathroom. i isolated her in the shower with a pan of litter, some water, some food and the cat carrier i would be transporting her in in the morning. she mewed a little bit, and ponce hissed at the bathroom door once, but other than that there wasn’t much drama.

in the morning i found her on the bathroom floor. she had somehow climbed over the six foot tall tile wall / shower doors and escaped my little sanctuary. i forgot that cats can be that agile - i’ve been living with a peaceful goliath. i snapped the above pic before hopping in a car and going to the shelter in east new york.

at the shelter, the micro-chip scanner revealed that she was no stray at all. indeed she was 4-year-old lilac, from troy avenue - roughly two blocks away from my house. i have to call the shelter to see if the owners picked her up. if they haven’t after 7 days she goes up for adoption.

if you have a pet anywhere, i urge you to have them chipped. it can literally be a life saver.

forget the film watch the titles

amazing website called FORGET THE FILM WATCH THE TITLES that’s part of submarine channel, an aggregator of interesting design projects on the web. pretty beautifully laid out sight too. FORGET THE FILM… showcases title sequences from movies in categories of Animation, Motion Graphics, Mixed Media and 3D Titles. amazing resource for anyone interested in time-based graphics. the collection also gives detailed descriptions of the films and premise of each sequence as well as completely crediting the designers and studios responsible.

here are a few of my fave title sequences :

Juno
Irréversible
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Intimate Ennemies
Wimbeldon
A Fistful of Dollars

i’ve never played this game / don’t ever want to play this game / will probably never play this game, but this post on pentagram’s rebranding of guitar hero is amazing - not only for its typographic success, but for the directions commissioned designers took with it and the amazing results.

information design hacks

Friday, September 4th, 2009

just saw this post on urbanprankster.com (via boing boing today that showcased some awesome street sign hackage from L.A. and New Haven, CT. it made me think of the amazing TED Talk by Stefan Sagmeister about “happy design.”

the entire talk is amazing and totally worth listening too, but at around 8:00 he talks about a project by NYC artist “True” in which he replace standard MTA information stickers with life advice. check it out :

also found this example of advisory sign hacks on gothamist :

the above is a snapshot taken on an iMac in room 515 of Pratt Institute’s Manhattan building using an awesome free photobooth clone netapp called cameroid (don’t worry, she asked us to do it!).

professor Christie Shin is asking us to keep tabs on our development over the course of the semester, in her Digital Design class, on a blog, so hooray! you’re in on it too.

you may also notice that there links (to the left of this post, on the sidebar) to other student’s blogs from the class (labeled “des. blog links,” should you be so inclined to compare and contrast our educational experiences.

awes.
