stairway to stardom

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

my friend dan safer - of awesome theater company witness relocation - sent me a link to the above video in an exchange of dorky youtube fun, and i got hooked.

apparently, “stairway to stardom” was a public access show in new york city from the 70s to the early 90s and featured some of basic-cable-via-the-internet’s brightest (ironic) stars. above, precious taft delivers a dramatic monologue from… something. after the jump, enjoy the song stylings of dante (a strange goulet-esque swinger), melissa ann ledwon’s mesmerizing contempo jazz tap, gloria huddle’s dramatic reading of a manhattan transfer song (showcasing her various “accent” skills), mark conner’s original songs (a number that shows off the amazing minimal STS decor) , al villa’s comic insight (a true test in patience), the high waisted belting of louise mascia, michele sutlovitch wanting to “live forever,” cheryl klein’s jewish hyper humor, and of course, the inimitable lola perazzo starting on her “rough climb to stardom.”

these people give john daker a run for his money.

design for a living world @ cooper-hewitt

Monday, September 14th, 2009

went to the cooper-hewitt national design museum this weekend and saw an amazing exhibit called sponsored by the nature conservancy. the exhibit’s been up since may and runs through january 4, 2010. if you’ve never been to the museum, i recommend checking it out for the architecture if nothing else. it’s housed in the carnegie mansion at 91st and 5th and is stunning.

the exhibit asked ten designers to create products from sustainable materials and include kate spade new york, isaac mizrahi, maya lin, yves béhar, christien meindertsma (whose organic wool project is depicted above) and abbott miller (from pentagram - also responsible for the exhibit’s exquisite layout).

the exhibit is $5 for students, $10 general and FREE for pratt students and faculty! (yay that’s me).

if you don’t want to make the trek, you can check out this (unlinkable flash) site, which includes all the video segments from the actual exhibition. but of course, seeing it in person is aces.

lilac

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

the other night at around 2:30am while i was furiously working to finish up a powerpoint presentation, i heard a tell-tale “mewing” outside my window. now, as some of you may know, i’ve got a thing for rescuing animals (see here) but the last time i did it, ponce, my giant orange cat, happened to be out of town and therefore couldn’t protest. this time, i had to deal with his nibs.

i went out to see what the fuss was about. i found this little kitty who was really well groomed and had a collar on with a bell but no identification. i figured she escaped from a nearby home and got lost, so i walked up and down the block looking for open windows but couldn’t find any. i finally decided to take her in, with the plan to take her to the animal shelter in the morning to see if she was tagged.

i did a little net research before i did, though. i didn’t want ponce to a.) get any weird diseases or b.) be pissed at me forever. i did what [insert random/creepy cat forum blog site name here] suggested and rushed her inside to the bathroom. i isolated her in the shower with a pan of litter, some water, some food and the cat carrier i would be transporting her in in the morning. she mewed a little bit, and ponce hissed at the bathroom door once, but other than that there wasn’t much drama.

in the morning i found her on the bathroom floor. she had somehow climbed over the six foot tall tile wall / shower doors and escaped my little sanctuary. i forgot that cats can be that agile - i’ve been living with a peaceful goliath. i snapped the above pic before hopping in a car and going to the shelter in east new york.

at the shelter, the micro-chip scanner revealed that she was no stray at all. indeed she was 4-year-old lilac, from troy avenue - roughly two blocks away from my house. i have to call the shelter to see if the owners picked her up. if they haven’t after 7 days she goes up for adoption.

if you have a pet anywhere, i urge you to have them chipped. it can literally be a life saver.

information design hacks

Friday, September 4th, 2009

just saw this post on urbanprankster.com (via boing boing today that showcased some awesome street sign hackage from L.A. and New Haven, CT. it made me think of the amazing TED Talk by Stefan Sagmeister about “happy design.”

the entire talk is amazing and totally worth listening too, but at around 8:00 he talks about a project by NYC artist “True” in which he replace standard MTA information stickers with life advice. check it out :
