I.O.U.S.A. hits home with great motion graphics

Monday, September 14th, 2009

just watched this amazing movie called I.O.U.S.A.. i actually watched the 30-minute version on youtube as soon as it came out because i had heard that i was in it! a few years ago, the film makers, indeed, interviewed me on the street showcasing my ineptitude about american economics. in the 30-minute version, there’s only a short clip of me looking stupefied by as simple question, but if you rent the DVD, you not only get more witty commetary from me, but a bonus reel of street interviews where i actually perform a dance from big dance theater’s 2005 production the other here.

what i found most successful about this film was the use of motion graphics to depict otherwise mind-numbingly boring statistics. the film is about the financial crisis facing the american economy today - how we got here, what we have to do to get out - and amazing graphic sequences by graphic designer brian oakes make it all understandable.

i highly suggest watching this movie (and the bonus material!) to get a grasp on how we got to where we got in this economic mess. and for anyone interested in motion graphics, this film is a must to see how simple, efficient design can make even the most mundane subject matter exquisite and interpretable.

you should care about this (part 1)

Dan Savage, Village Voice columnist responsible for the amazing weekly, Savage Love writes this in today’s issue :

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY: The police in Fort Worth, Texas, marked the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion—three nights of rioting sparked by a “routine” police raid on a gay bar in New York City—by raiding a gay bar called the Rainbow Lounge. One of the men arrested, Chad Gibson, was so brutally assaulted by the police that, as of this writing, he remains hospitalized with a life-threatening brain injury.

Police Chief Jeff Halstead claims that the men at the Rainbow Lounge made lewd advances toward his officers and specifically accused Gibson, a slight 26-year-old, of groping one of his cops. This preposterous claim is contradicted by eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence.

We can’t let the police in Fort Worth use the Gay Panic Defense (”That fag touched me, so of course I beat him nearly to death!”) to excuse this brutal violation of the civil rights of Fort Worth’s gay community. If you’re on Facebook, please show your support by joining the Rainbow Lounge Raid group (www.tinyurl.com/lavecu). And please e-mail or call the mayor of Fort Worth—Mike Moncrief, 817-392-6118, mike.moncrief@fortworthgov.org—and demand a full investigation into the raid on the Rainbow Lounge and that charges be brought against the officers who assaulted Chad Gibson.

where’s chris? [puerta del sol, madrid]

cloudy sol

the above combo of three pictures is of a cloudy day in (ironically named) puerta del sol - or the door of the sun - which is the times square / tourist trap / pickpocket heaven of madrid.

i came to madrid almost ten years ago with my high school spanish class and experienced the city through 17 year-old on-a-tour-bus eyes. this time, although my level of spanish comprehension is comparable, i feel like i am getting a much richer experience.

last time we stayed at sol, in a ritzy hotel that had bidets - something me and my roomate mike were fascinated with. however, we didn’t, in any way understand the extent of the diversity of the city or it’s many neighborhoods. this time, jess and i have made particular effort to explore the neighborhoods of malesaña, la latina and chueca on the suggestion of my friend natalie. this weekend is supposedly the largest party weekend in all of spain, and i happen to be spending this night in the internet room of our hostel with several other euro-destitutes glued to g-chat and facebook instead of participating in monstrous fiestas.

that didn’t stop jess and i from visiting about 6 different bars eating tapas and drinking for the last several horus.

that’s just how we do in spain.

i always heard that the spanish were severe party-ers, but i had conveniently chosen to deny it. alas, after last night’s debauchery (which i will not go into on this blog), i have learned otherwise.

so tonight i take a break and save up for tomorrow’s festivities.

el dos de mayo (the second of may) is like american independence day or french bastille day - except with more alcohol, public intoxication and many more cigarettes. boundaries between public space and pub space seem to be non existent here, but somehow everyone seems to get along and stay happy and safe.

i have many more pictures to post of various architecture and fascinating things here in madrid (as well as some photos from my escapades in la parc de la tet d’or in lyon), but i will endeavor to post those when the sun is on my side.

until then… aurevoir - adios.

silver (or gold) lined fabulousness

the pres, vice pres and ladies

first of all, let’s just talk about how fabulous michelle (christian-missionary-wardrobe) obama looked today, especially after that election night outfit debacle. and what’s more, how good ol’ jill biden never disappoints and always has a hem at least 5 inches higher than michelle’s during any public appearance (and just for today: hooker boots). i watched the inauguration with jess and she was drooling over jill’s MILF-y look.

now that all that important stuff’s out of the way, let’s talk about me.

you might imagine that i’m pissed off right now, especially because i was openly pissed off about rick warren making the invocation on this day of days from the start. and also maybe because he talked a lot about jesus (or “yeshua,” as he’s known to friends) in his invocation - along with saying “malia and sasha” with creepy, child-molester intonation.

or, also because openly gay bishop gene robinson’s speech was conveniently left out of sunday’s “we are one” concert broadcast on HBO - a decision that apparently was made by the PIC (presidential inauguration committee). afterelton.com has this update, which includes a ‘takin’ the blame’ quote from the PIC, and an assertion that this morning, before the inauguration, robinson’s words (along with the enitrety of the concert) were to be aired on the mall’s jumbotrons before today’s ceremony. i still haven’t been able to find confirmation that that actually happened. anybody? anybody?

but alas, friends, i’m not too pissed off. but why?

as you may know, us second-class gays were not included in any laundry list of oppressed folk by any speaker this morning - although the sucker in me totally appreciated obama’s allusions to “tolerance” in various forms. “tolerance! that means he’s talking about the gays! we got somethin’! right? right!?”

so where’s the silver lining - other than in michelle’s monastic overcoat?

it’s here :

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers.

what what WHAT!? did he say “non-believers!?!” atheists!?!?! WTF!?!?!?

yes, my friends. i might be a big ole fag, but i’m also a big ole “non-believer” - and while i can’t say that any remarks today were particularly envelope-pushing regarding the rights of me and my sexually deviant brethren, the inclusion of atheists in an inaugural address is MASSIVE.

of course, obama has mentioned us godless folk several times in speeches, and there have been allegations that his parents were atheists themselves, but the fact that at perhaps the most-watched, presidential-pattern-setting moment he decided to include us means that we exist. we exist, we are americans and we matter.

the gay in me is still seething, but the atheist in me is brimming with joy. of course this is a small victory - after all yeshua was there in full force all over that ceremony - but where as the gay rights movement is rolling in full force, atheists are continuously legally and socially oppressed wherever they go. we are a group that is more often ignored than condemned and in this religiously-righteous day-in-age any mention in the public theatre is monumental.

overall, i’m doin’ fine. gay and atheist angst inside my chest is swirling, but on this historic day i’d like us all to remember the following (my dad commented on my last post with this, yesterday):

Chris and friends,
I share your disappointment and anger, and deal with it by reminding myself that America is not simply a country, it is a process moving ever forward toward something more noble and inclusive. That process comes to a screeching halt the moment we become so disillusioned and bitter that we allow injustice to continue. Justice was not born with the universe, not essential to the cosmos as is gravity, electromagnetism and the nuclear forces. Justice must be manifested by thinking, feeling beings. Barack Obama stands as president today because, despite the setbacks in his own life, he always remained true to that hopeful process. Let us in our own struggle also be true, and when the day comes when we watch the first openly gay American take the presidential oath, let that same arc toward justice compel us to include those who have yet to have their human dignity acknowledged. With that great process in mind, we can truly celebrate this inauguration day.

amen, y’all.

o, happy day?

bishop gene robinson

when it was announced that openly gay episcopalian bishop, gene robinson was to make the invocation at the inauguration-celebrating “we are one” concert, aired on HBO yesterday, the gays were happy again. we momentarily forgave obama for his pick of rick warren (that guy who thinks we’re pedophiles) to do the invocation at the inauguration.

but of course, there was still trouble in river city. for some strange reason, bishop robinson’s invocation didn’t make it to the HBO broadcast. and who’s fault was that? afterelton.com talked to HBO about it :

Contacted Sunday night by AfterElton.com concerning the exclusion of Robinson’s prayer, HBO said via email, “The producer of the concert has said that the Presidential Inaugural Committee made the decision to keep the invocation as part of the pre-show.”

Uncertain as to whether or not that meant that HBO was contractually prevented from airing the pre-show, we followed up, but none of the spokespeople available Sunday night could answer that question with absolute certainty.

However, it does seem that the network’s position is that they had nothing to do with the decision.

what’s more, as soon as robinson took the stage, the speakers on the mall “malfunctioned” and most of the estimated 750,000 atendees missed his opening remarks. lloyd phillips write in a comment from boxturtlebulliten.com :

I was at the national mall for the concert, about 1/2 a mile from the Lincoln Memorial, and the moment Gene Robinson took to the stage, the speakers went out. We couldn’t hear a word of the entire invocation. Of course minutes before when Elmo was on the jumbotrons speaking about unity, everything was fine. The moment the gay bishop takes to the stage suddenly there is technical issues. Of course when I get home I find out that HBO cut Gene Robinson from the footage. It’s really horrible and sad. I really don’t think it was a “day of unity” for everyone.

luckily some christian with a camera caught it on tape :

also apparently, the DC gay men’s chorus wasn’t announced when they performed at the event. they backed up notoriously straight singer, josh groban.

wow. this olive branch tastes like poop.

i’m still mad.

rick warren

dear liberal america,

you just got scammed.

remember when all those green party friends of yours told you that barack obama was “too good to be true?” that he was “just another part of the machine?” that his promises of hope were “hollow and just another ploy for a well-established capitalist regime to gain control of america’s resources for financial gain?”

but you were like : “no way! he’s the real deal!”

and then remember when you heard that he didn’t support gay marriage but did support civil unions?

but you were like : “nah… he’s just doing that because he has to placate the masses! he really does support gay marriage but he’s just saying he doesn’t to get elected!”

and then, very recently, remember when barack obama chose evangelical pastor rick warren to deliver the invocation at his innauguration - a man that equates homosexuality to incest and pedophilia?

and you’re like : “….oh fuck.”

yeah. that’s called : you just got scammed.

all those hippy, anarchist, pinko friends of yours (remember the ones you said fucked up the election in 2000?) were right. apparently barack obama wasn’t only pandering to the ex-republicans and homo-haters out there with his attempt at moderate policy - he was also pandering to you. and i know. now you feel bad that you were swayed by his glorious speeches and that this dude made you involved in politics for the first time in your adult life and now he’s shitting all over your human rights… but really.

what did you expect?

wait, i know that too. you thought that this guy was tapped in to what was really going on. this guy has youtube fireside chats. you thought that if the american people have a problem with him, he’ll be more aware of it and swift-acting-to-fix-it than any other president. and just a few days ago you thought that surely the backlash on the internet over this decision will get to him and make him realize that most of his supporters aren’t cool with this.

but again, you’re wrong.

and it’s not for not trying. check out change.gov’s “join the discussion” pages and look at the comments. people use the internet and don’t like this decision. but what has it warranted from the obama campaign? just another “we’re trying to bring people together” line of bullshit.

i have a news flash for you mr. prez. you’ve got us. we’re all cozy and together and we all voted for you. now is not the time to try to win over those that didn’t by seducing them with hate. john mccain tried that, remember? and it didn’t work.

and fuck that bullshit of “well, all those bible thumpers are americans too. we said we’re gonna reach across the aisle and that’s who’s on the other side, so deal.” first of all, i was never a fan of that. i wanted this dude to just convince everyone that being a democrat is better. i want those “people on the other side” to come over to our side - i’m not interested in fulfilling their hateful agendas. there’s not a simple difference of opinion here. it’s not like my side likes vanilla ice cream and their side likes chocolate. my side (or at least the smart ones) favor human rights for ALL humans. their side would rather us fags would just disappear and let jesus do his work without any interruptions.

in this case, i’m saying my side is right. and guess what? i always say that. that’s the whole point of being ON A SIDE. fuck these false hopes of unifying our nation in simple singular political fell swoops. why doesn’t barack obama do what he does best (or at least what i thought he did best) and educate.

why not teach all those idiots that hate gay people that there’s no difference between gay and straight people! that we share a fuck load of stuff! instead of saying : “america, it’s great to be gay and it’s also great to hate gays. that’s what unity means!”

getting scammed sucks. i don’t even know what to think anymore.

and i’m sorry all you smelly, nader-ites out there. i was wrong. i guess you were right - still fucking annoying - but right.

ugh.

xo chris

i love my dad.

let me introduce you to my father, anthony giarmo. he is one of the most brilliant men i know and he supports me fully in everything i do.

this is a clip of him speaking at a NJ state legislature meeting describing the difference between civil unions and marriage. i hope his advocacy and intelligence help to shape your view on this issue, and more importantly those who do not seem to be on our side.

i love my dad, and i’m so proud of him for all he does to protect my rights as a human being.
