i actually got the amazing opportunity to see this man in concert once at NJPAC in newark and it was unbelievable. it was two and a half hours of just him being absolutely mind-blowing. his cover of paul maccartney’s blackbird is brilliant.

Josh Fox is working on this amazing documentary that’s exposing the extremely criminal acts of “clean” natural gas drilling companies. tonight i’m going to TOXIC SPLASH BASH, a benefit for the film which will featuring phenomenal performances by Reverend Billy, Rude Mechanical Orchestra, and a whole bunch of other awesome activist art folk. and there’s apparently a ton of free food. and it’s only $15.

hope to see you there. but if not, please check out waterunderattack.com to learn more about this important film, and to be completely freaked out and motivated to do something about it.

CERN!!!!!!!!!!

i am a huge nerd. i love physics. specifically theoretical physics. specifically string theory and the quest to discover a T.O.E. (theory of everything). science today is extremely close to unlocking the secrets of the universe and the place on earth that is making the greatest contribution to this quest is CERN, the european center for nuclear research.

CERN is home to the brand new large hadron collider or LHC - the world’s largest particle accelerator. basically they shoot protons around this 27km long ring buried 100m underground until they reach 99.9% the speed of light (!). then they smash them into each other and observe the results. it was a total dork-dream come true to visit this place, and even though i didn’t get the tour that i had tried to book months in advance (seriously) i still had a great time visiting ‘microcosm’ - this exhibit that explains the history of CERN and what they’re trying to find.

and i got to play with things like this ! :

CERN!!!!!!!!!!

yep, that’s a geiger counter. this is what it reads when detecting radiation from a watch made with radium in the 1950s. that’s high, btw.

CERN!!!!!!!!!!

when particles smash together, the various detectors that are set up track the trails and energy emitted by the smaller particles that compose them. protons are made of quarks, for instance, so when two protons collide they emit quarks - and a whole bunch of other interesting things. above is picture of the methods they used to map particle paths in the 70s. basically using a big overhead projector.

CERN!!!!!!!!!!

here’s a photo of a photo of what that looks like printed. and a physicist (with awesome 70s hair) observing the results (in the 70s).

madrid office building

the faux-rusted facade of this office building - a branch of la caixa, a catalán bank - sits on top of what appears to be a much older building. a perpendicular wall sprouts colorful vines and foliage.

it makes me think about the idea of urban vertical farming or just basic city beautification.

it seems the most successful public works projects bring nature back to urban spaces. and this, even though it is a private endeavor, makes everyone stop and look - and what’s more, inspires a sense of sustainability and diversity of life. no need to repaint a big, ugly concrete wall for a new look. just replant.

MFAD forum invite

i’m not in new york right now - and won’t be until june - but if i was, i would be attending the SVA MFA Designer as Author Thesis Forum on April 22nd.

i didn’t apply to SVA for grad-school this fall because i thought their graphic design program seemed a little too “crunchy,” but this show looks awesome. and i think it’s free.

Steven Heller of PRINT magazine says :

The School of Visual Arts (SVA) MFA Designer as Author program is holding its first annual Thesis Forum at the new SVA Visual Arts Theater next Wednesday, April 22. During this daylong, marathon event (9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.), MFAD thesis students will present their entrepreneurial products on the big stage. The public is welcome for all (or some) of the day’s presentations.

Moderated by guest host/faculty members Milton Glaser (keynote) Scott Stowell, and Lita Talarico, with a special end note by Allan Chochinov, the day is divided into three sessions that will showcase the unique products, objects, and campaigns created for the contemporary marketplace. A catalog, entrepreneurial gifts, and delicious finger food will be available.

The SVA Theater is located at 333 West 23rd St. And if you cannot make the Thesis Forum, please attend the opening of “Potential Energy: 19 Designers Set Their Ideas in Motion,” the MFAD thesis exhibition, Tuesday, May 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th Floor. (The exhibition is up until May 16). Come view the work and then give us your comments.

sounds fun!

also : check out this super shoddy website that was published before all the kinks were worked out for Sprint / Palm’s new awesome phone - the Palm Pre. i’m not an iPhone user and i’m not gonna be. when this baby comes out i’m ditching Verizon and going with Jamie Lee’s favorite company.
