les machines de l’île

Monday, March 15th, 2010

i went here.

i took the above video with my digital camera. the song is “Nantes” by Beirut. most of the video consists of a 45 minute giant elephant ride that Kourtney and i took. the first part of the video features a bunch of french high school students riding some prototypes for a giant marine carousel that they are planning to build.

Les Machines was created after founding artist, François Delarozière split up with Royal de Luxe, a company responsible for this shit.

infographic

i saw this french info-graphic at a customer service phone at Paris CDG airport. i’m really interested in the symbol in the top right corner with the two overlapping faces. it reminds me of this (check out 1:26).

i think it’s supposed to mean “meeting point.” weird.

stairway to stardom

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

my friend dan safer - of awesome theater company witness relocation - sent me a link to the above video in an exchange of dorky youtube fun, and i got hooked.

apparently, “stairway to stardom” was a public access show in new york city from the 70s to the early 90s and featured some of basic-cable-via-the-internet’s brightest (ironic) stars. above, precious taft delivers a dramatic monologue from… something. after the jump, enjoy the song stylings of dante (a strange goulet-esque swinger), melissa ann ledwon’s mesmerizing contempo jazz tap, gloria huddle’s dramatic reading of a manhattan transfer song (showcasing her various “accent” skills), mark conner’s original songs (a number that shows off the amazing minimal STS decor) , al villa’s comic insight (a true test in patience), the high waisted belting of louise mascia, michele sutlovitch wanting to “live forever,” cheryl klein’s jewish hyper humor, and of course, the inimitable lola perazzo starting on her “rough climb to stardom.”

these people give john daker a run for his money.

flash! typography!

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

i created this typographic animation for prof. christie shin’s digital design i class at pratt.

the assignment was to create an animation in flash primarily using typography, representing a neighborhood in new york city. we also had to create a brand identity for the neighborhood. i chose stuyvesant heights - my neighborhood! my intention with this animation was to brand stuyvesant heights historic district as a destination for anyone who appreciates brooklyn history and is interested in the culture, community and architecture of this extremely well preserved, turn of the century neighborhood.

our next assignment is to create an image-based animation using after effects.

i’m excited about the second assignment, as i’ve never used after effects before. this assignment wasn’t necessarily easy (although i do have ample experience creating websites in flash) but it’ll be interesting to see if i’m savvy enough to be able to translate the images in my head to the screen.

ps - grad school rocks.
