where’s chris? [9e arr. a Perrache]

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

this morning i decided to take a trek out into the city center of lyon to get some information about the velo bicycles that you can rent from stations around the city, and to explore a little bit. it rained this morning and the light was superb so i brought my camera.

i took the D metro from Valmy in the 9e arrondissement to Bellecour, a big red dirt square. in the above picture, you can see Fourvière in the background (the church on the hill).

the square is home to a tourism office where i asked for a map and a gay guide, and found out that there was no way to rent the velo bikes without a european credit card.

where’s chris? [at jfk]

video chat

i’m sitting in a semi-comfy chair at jfk after paying way too much for wifi via boingo, and paying way too little for a fossil watch (duty free = yes!) - which will be delivered to me at the gate when i board the plane. class.

i’ve got about two more hours before i board a 747 and fly to heathrow with a bunch of annoying british people and their screaming kids with nintendo DS’s. luckily i’ve secured a window seat by checking in online, have an ample supply of antihistamine sleeping pills and didn’t sleep last night. prognosis? a comatose flight to london-town for chris.

after a transfer in heathrow (which will probably involve taking a bus to another terminal) and a two-hour layover, i’m off to lyon where i’ll be stationed for two weeks performing with big dance theater. then it’s off to spain and anywhere my little heart desires for four more weeks. woo hoo.

be sure to check THIS site. my blog. for photos and updates. i’ve just decided to roll that way.

so deal.

i’m kinda abandoning facebook and twitter for this journey. i just want my documentation of this trek to be on my terms and not get lost in the standard sea of tweets and status updates.

this was the best salmon i’ve ever tasted. the owner of this place owns a couple other brasseries one for each cardinal direction. his name is paul bocuse. yum.

batsheva dance company

i’ve officially been in lyon for a week. we’ve actually gotten to see a lot of the city, even though we’ve been working most of the time on our dance-theater piece. it’s been lovely. we’ve made family meals, explored the old city (vieux lyon), and tonight we got to see batsheva dance company in this :

ancient roman amphitheater

this is apparently the oldest roman amphitheater in france. katie and i explored it on sunday and i snapped this photo. tonight we made a picnic hoping to be able to eat in the theater before the show, but we weren’t allowed to bring in knives and bottles so we ended up eating in a nearby park. anyway.

the show was amazing. i actually took a class with ohad naharin, the artistic director, at cedar lake last year. his ‘methodology’ is called ‘gaga.’ there were ‘gaga dancer’ classes and ‘gaga people’ classes. i took the one for people. it rocked. we were boiling spaghetti on the floor.

his company consists of the best dancers i’ve ever seen. i’ve seen a lot of dance. and i’ve seen some really amazing technicians, and some people with incredible style or execution, but never have i seen a combination of technique and execution like this. each company member is classically trained (it seems) but is also inundated with naharin’s teachings for years. witnessing this synthesis is a treat.

their facility and intention of movement are flawless, phenomenal. and there is also this layer of elasticity and abandon over their impeccable technique that makes it truly brilliant to behold. this company was recently at BAM, but i missed them. i guess i just had to wait see them in an ancient roman amphitheater instead. shucks.

the audience was extremely enthralled with the performance (the piece was called ‘decadance’ btw) and they stood and threw their seat cushions on to the stage at the end - missing mostly, and hitting innocent low level bystanders.

in a totally unrelated - except in a geographical way - here is a photo of the inside of notre dame du fourviere basilique - a big honkin’ church on a hill that was built in the early 1900s right next to the amphitheater :

pretty church

you could buy these candles to light and place in a crazy candelabra for 1 to 3 euro. depending on how much you care about the person you’re praying for, you spend more or less! :

here’s me and katie being tourists overlooking lyon :

chris and katie and lyon

we had to walk up an insane amount of steps to get to this place so forgive if i look a little exhausted.

also, the night before kourtney and i went out on the (gay) town, and with the help of her franglais (that’s english and french) we got into some pretty euro-fun (read: lame) places. we made the best of it, though (read: got drunk). not too many fun stories about that. except when kourtney used this bathroom at ‘PINKS’ after some drunk french chick puked all over it, then had to explain to the rest of the people on line that it wasn’t her. genius.

we danced to the worst michael jackson remixes ever.

cheap french prescription antacid.

i ate kebab two days ago.

apparently that’s some kind of (delicious-ish) gyro-like meat stuffed in a pita. it made my stomach feel like it was going to explode for two days. ew.

anyway. the point of telling you this is that michael moore was right! prescription drugs in france are f’in’ cheap!

as you probably know, the dollar sucks right now, so i was assuming that things would be ludicrously overpriced. for example, an 8 oz bottle of apple juice cost 3 euro, roughly $4.50. my prescription antacids (pictured above) cost a whopping 1 euro 58. that’s like 3 bucks. kidding? no way. for reals. for super super seriouses.

so yes. get sick in france. it’s cheaper.

i promise - now that i’m kebab-less - my posts will be more interesting. katie and i are going to take a morning stroll to buy phone cards tomorrow, so i’ll take some basic photos of the immediate surroundings and post them for your viewing pleasure.

til then, i’ll eat blandly, and drink only cassis and flat water. it’s yum.

a view from katie\'s window

this is me sticking my head out of katie’s room’s window precariously dangling her laptop in my greasy hands - the same laptop i’m typing on right now in the “common area”/stairwell, while katie tries to stay awake.

we had a lovely, albeit exhausting, trip to lyon, and now we are in a weird flux of jetlag and simple nougatine ice cream (what the hell is that? delicious.) um.

this place is fucking awesome. will fill you in more in the future.

parents - i made it safe and sound.
