vejer de la frontera

so right now i’m in paris staying at the amazing apartment of my dear friend cecile. this morning i woke up at 6am in the tiny pueblo que se llama Vejer De La Frontera, where i stayed for two days with my new friend (and big dance theater alum) Ally.

Vejer is one of a handful of towns on the southern coast of spain that has some of the only virgin beaches left in the world. no hotels. no boardwalks or amusement parks. just sand, surf, rocks and a couple of amazing bars and restaurants.

video chat

i’m sitting in a semi-comfy chair at jfk after paying way too much for wifi via boingo, and paying way too little for a fossil watch (duty free = yes!) - which will be delivered to me at the gate when i board the plane. class.

i’ve got about two more hours before i board a 747 and fly to heathrow with a bunch of annoying british people and their screaming kids with nintendo DS’s. luckily i’ve secured a window seat by checking in online, have an ample supply of antihistamine sleeping pills and didn’t sleep last night. prognosis? a comatose flight to london-town for chris.

after a transfer in heathrow (which will probably involve taking a bus to another terminal) and a two-hour layover, i’m off to lyon where i’ll be stationed for two weeks performing with big dance theater. then it’s off to spain and anywhere my little heart desires for four more weeks. woo hoo.

be sure to check THIS site. my blog. for photos and updates. i’ve just decided to roll that way.

so deal.

i’m kinda abandoning facebook and twitter for this journey. i just want my documentation of this trek to be on my terms and not get lost in the standard sea of tweets and status updates.

the concept of ‘went’

walking on mount etna

i once went to sicily and climbed mount etna. it’s the largest volcano in europe. today i went to work. a few years ago i went to a lot of parties. last year i went on a lot of dates. i don’t negate the fact that time is moving forward and that when man does the remarkable thing of moving forward in both time and space, that it is an accomplishment difficult to depreciate - but the idea of one existing based on the places he’s been leaves something to be desired in my mind. yes. i would like to travel - see the world, have the experiences. but summations of ‘where you went’ leave me lost and disappointed. i shouldn’t have gone. i couldn’t have gone. i did go. i didn’t. i went away. away. when is ‘coming back?’ what does that mean? what does life look like if you evaluate it on returns and not sojourns? i know it’s not as flashy, but i am proud of the things i return to - the things that are followed through. ‘returning’ has a sense of humility that ‘going’ does not. and it’s always more comforting. and yet more dangerous.

be impressed that i went to etna. think more of the fact that i came back.
